A pioneer—one who initiates an undertaking for the first time and becomes a trailblazer for others, is an exemplar to be precise.

Kamal & Sons is a Company that needs no introduction. Even globally, visitors to the Kamal & Sons site will find familiarity with a name that is virtually etched on the seeds of psyllium.

The quality of psyllium seeds, husks & powder, processed and exported by Kamal & Sons is legend. Comparative studies and laboratory tests in India and abroad have proven that the psyllium products from Kamal & Sons excel in quality.

The parent Company, Kamal & Sons was established way back in 1948 under the name and style of Indo Exports. Export of quality psyllium (Isphagula) products began in the early 1950s, and, before long, effortlessly conquered the U.S., European and Middle East markets.

The Plant

THE PLANT

The plant, using latest technology and know-how setup on a 30,000 sq/m area with state-of-the-art infrastructure, is located on the main Ahmedabad-Delhi National Highway 115 Kilometers from Ahmedabad, connected by Rail , Road and Air with the National/International routes. Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) integrated with International Quality Management System and Food Safety Programme (HACCP) have been implemented for achieving consistency in product quality, increasing customer confidence and satisfaction.

Growing Psyllium

The plant grows on well-drained sandy loam soil. Seeds are sown (3.5 to 4.5 Kg per acre) in November and December. Cool dry weather is favourable to the crop. Rainy and cloudy weather at the time of maturity and frost at the flowering stage affect adversely both yield and quality of seeds. The crop is given 5-7 doses of irrigation, and weeding is done when the crop is about 1 ½ months old.

The plant gives out profuse tillerings and the forth tillers vary from 25 to 80 in number depending on the fertility of the soil. Manure or chemical fertilizer applications are not required. The crop is ready for harvest in about 3 ½ - 4 months from sowing. The spikes are harvested in March - April when they turn red. The yield per acre varies from 3.0 to 3.5 quintals depending on weather conditions at the time of flowering and harvesting.

Processing

Isabgol Seeds (Botanical name : Plantago ovata forsk) are mainly valued for their mucilaginous husk, a thin white membrane covering the seed which is separated from the seed by a mechanical process where no chemicals are used

After thorough cleaning of the seeds from the Pre-cleaning and Cleaning sections, the process of de-husking the seed consists of crushing with emery mills through eight passes and separation of husk through a closed circuit fully automatic pneumatic aspiration system. The husk is then passed through Gravity separators for further purification before custom packaging.

The entire plant and equipment are designed and fabricated as per specific requirements by experts in processing agricultural / Pharmaceutical products. Pneumatic conveying and separation systems have been setup with a view to almost fully automatise operations so as to eliminate touch by hand, an essential for preparing hygienic clean Food / Pharmaceutical grade of Psyllium Husks.

Fumigation & Sterilisation

The plant is equipped with special built-in chambers for fumigation of incoming raw material consignments, and also for the finished products before they are taken to the Dispatch Station for loading on to Containers and/or Motor Trucks, to safeguard the product during transit.

The dosage of the Fumigant and treatments are carried out as per specifications of the Importing Countries and requirements specified by the Buyers.

Sterilistion of the finished product with Ethylene Oxide, Gamma Rays Irradiation or Steam Heat Sterilistion are provided through Contract Facilities upon specific requests from the Buyers.

Packaging & Dispatch

Special attention is paid to pack the bulk product by filling in suitable bag-sizes with standard measures to ensure product quality and safety during transit and storage.

Flexible packaging solutions from 950 kilo Jumbo HDPE circular woven bags to 50 kilo and 25 kilo HDPE bags as well as multi-walled paper bags, and hard packaging solutions such as corrugated boxes and  fibre drums are used for exports in conformity with buyers requirements. Conventional packing is available in Jute bags.
